Torah Portion Summary

The twenty-ninth reading from the Torah and sixth reading from Leviticus is named Acharei Mot, two words that mean “after the death.” The title comes from the first words of the first verse of the reading, which say, “Now the LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron” (Leviticus 16:1). Leviticus 16 describes the Tabernacle ceremony for the holy festival of the Day of Atonement. Leviticus 17 establishes general rules for sacrifice and sanctuary. Leviticus 18 lays down specific laws about permitted and forbidden sexual relationships.

Haftarh Portion Summary

The Haftarah reading from Ezekiel 22 indicts Israel for failing to obey the Torah of Moses and consequently invokes the judgment of the LORD, which includes the Diaspora of the Jewish people:

"I will scatter you among the nations and disperse you through the countries, and I will consume your uncleanness out of you. And you shall be profaned by your own doing in the sight of the nations, and you shall know that I am the LORD."

Notice, however, that the purpose of the Diaspora is to "consume the uncleanness" out of the Jewish people, and therefore is ultimately restorative.

B'rit Chadashah Portion Summary

The Brit Chadashah reading tells us that the Mashiach Yeshua appeared as the High Priest (Kohen Gadol) of the true tabernacle (of which the earthly tabernacle was merely a shadow) and there offered His own blood to secure eternal redemption for those who are trusting in Him. Yeshua did this by dying on the cross and shedding His blood as the perfect sacrificial victim for the penalty of sins committed under the Torah of Moses.

In the first covenant (i.e., the Torah of Moses), innocent sacrificial victims had to be killed in order to benefit from their death. This is most evident in the Yom Kippur ceremony where the sins of the nation were covered by the "blood of bulls and goats" for the previous year's sins. But this ritual, like the others instituted in the earthly tabernacle, foreshadowed the coming Substance that was prophesied (Hebrews 8:5).

A testament is not of force until the testator is dead. That is, a "will" comes into effect only after someone dies. The New Covenant of Almighty God was put into effect when Yeshua the Mashiach was sacrificed and died, and the heirs to this "will" receive eternal forgiveness for their sins - unlike the contingent forgiveness obtained by the rituals offered in the earthly pattern of the true Holy Place.

Trying to live under two covenants at the same time is similar to being married to two women at once - which is a form of spiritual adultery. Those who are joined ["married" KJV] to Mashiach are dead to (i.e., separated from) the Torah of Moses (Rom. 7:2-4). Praise the God of Israel for our High Priest Jesus, the Mediator of the New Covenant through His sacrifice for us!

One of the roles of our beloved Mashiach Yeshua (Jesus Christ) is that of Kohen HaGadol (High Priest) who offered true kapparah [atonement] for our sins by offering His own blood in the Holy of Holies made without hands. As it is written in the letter of Hebrews:

Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God's house. (Hebrews 3:1-2)

  Lev 16:1, And the LORD spake unto Moses after the bdeath of the two sons of Aaron, when they offered before the LORD, and died;
16:2, And the LORD said unto Moses, Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the vail before the mercy seat, which is upon the ark; that he die not: for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy seat.
16:3, Thus shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering.
16:4, He shall put on the holy linen coat, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with a linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired: these are holy garments; therefore shall he wash his flesh in water, and so put them on.
16:5, ¶ And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two kids of the goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering.
16:6, And Aaron shall offer his bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and make an catonement for himself, and for his house.
16:7, And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
16:8, And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the dscapegoat.
16:9, And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD'S elot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.
16:10, But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the awilderness.
16:11, And Aaron shall bring the bullock of the sin offering, which is for himself, and shall make an atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin offering which is for himself:
16:12, And he shall take a bcenser full of burning coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet cincense beaten small, and bring it within the vail:
16:13, And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the dcloud of the incense may cover the emercy seat that is upon the testimony, that he die not:
16:14, And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the mercy seat eastward; and before the mercy seat shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.
16:15, ¶ Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that fblood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:
16:16, And he shall make an gatonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
16:17, And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.
16:18, And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.
16:19, And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.
16:20, ¶ And when he hath made an end of hreconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat:
16:21, And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and iconfess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, jputting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:
16:22, And the goat shall abear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.
16:23, And Aaron shall come into the tabernacle of the congregation, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there:
16:24, And he shall wash his flesh with water in the holy place, and put on his garments, and come forth, and offer his burnt offering, and the burnt offering of the people, and make an atonement for himself, and for the people.
16:25, And the fat of the sin offering shall he burn upon the altar.
16:26, And he that let go the goat for the scapegoat shall wash his clothes, and bbathe his flesh in water, and afterward come into the camp.
16:27, And the bullock for the sin offering, and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall one carry forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung.
16:28, And he that burneth them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp.
16:29, ¶ And this shall be a statute for ever unto you: that in the cseventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall dafflict your souls, and do no work at all, whether it be one of your own ecountry, or a stranger that sojourneth among you:
16:30, For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean from all your sins before the LORD.
16:31, It shall be a fsabbath of rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls, by a statute for ever.
16:32, And the priest, whom he shall anoint, and whom he shall consecrate to minister in the priest's office in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen clothes, even the holy garments:
16:33, And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and he shall make an atonement for the priests, and for all the people of the congregation.
16:34, And this shall be an geverlasting statute unto you, to make an atonement for the children of Israel for all their sins honce a year. And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.
17:1, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
17:2, Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them; This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, saying,
17:3, What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp,
17:4, And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD; blood shall be aimputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people:
17:5, To the end that the children of Israel may bring their bsacrifices, which they offer in the open field, even that they may bring them unto the LORD, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest, and offer them for peace offerings unto the LORD.
17:6, And the priest shall sprinkle the blood upon the altar of the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and burn the fat for a sweet savour unto the LORD.
17:7, And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto cdevils, after whom they have gone a dwhoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.
17:8, ¶ And thou shalt say unto them, Whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers which sojourn among you, that of-fereth a burnt offering or sacrifice,
17:9, And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer it unto the LORD; even that man shall be ecut off from among his people.
17:10, ¶ And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, that eateth any manner of fblood; I will even set my face against that soul that eateth blood, and will gcut him off from among his people.
17:11, For the hlife of the flesh is in the iblood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that maketh an jatonement for the soul.
17:12, Therefore I said unto the children of Israel, No soul of you shall keat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourneth among you eat blood.
17:13, And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among you, which hunteth and catcheth any beast or fowl that may be eaten; he shall even lpour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust.
17:14, For it is the life of all flesh; the blood of it is for the life thereof: therefore I said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh: for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof: whosoever eateth it shall be cut off.
17:15, And every soul that eateth that which died of itself, or that which was torn with beasts, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger, he shall both wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even: then shall he be clean.
17:16, But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh; then he shall bear his iniquity.
18:1, And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
18:2, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God.
18:3, After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of aCanaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances.
18:4, Ye shall do my bjudgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God.
18:5, Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man cdo, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.
18:6, ¶ None of you shall approach to any that is near of dkin to him, to uncover their nakedness: I am the LORD.
18:7, The nakedness of thy father, or the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
18:8, The nakedness of thy efather's wife shalt thou not uncover: it is thy father's nakedness.
18:9, The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy ffather, or daughter of thy mother, whether she be born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover.
18:10, The nakedness of thy son's daughter, or of thy daughter's daughter, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover: for theirs is thine own nakedness.
18:11, The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
18:12, Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman.
18:13, Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister: for she is thy mother's near kinswoman.
18:14, Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt.
18:15, Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter in law: she is thy son's gwife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
18:16, Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness.
18:17, Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter, neither shalt thou take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness; for they are her near kinswomen: it is hwickedness.
18:18, Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.
18:19, ¶ Also thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is put apart for her iuncleanness.
18:20, Moreover thou shalt not lie carnally with thy jneighbour's wife, to defile thyself with her.
18:21, And thou shalt not let any of thy seed apass through the fire to bMolech, neither shalt thou cprofane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.
18:22, Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is dabomination.
18:23, Neither shalt thou lie with any ebeast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is fconfusion.
18:24, Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are gdefiled which I cast out before you:
18:25, And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the hiniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself ivomiteth out her inhabitants.
18:26, Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourn-eth among you:
18:27, (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;)
18:28, That the land jspue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you.
18:29, For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them shall be kcut off from among their people.
18:30, Therefore shall ye keep mine ordinance, that ye lcommit not any one of these abominable mcustoms, which were committed before you, and that ye ndefile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.
Amo 9:7, Are ye not as children of the fEthiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Have not I brought up Israel out of the land of Egypt? and the Philistines from gCaphtor, and the Syrians from Kir?
9:8, Behold, the heyes of the Lord GOD are upon the sinful kingdom, and I will destroy it from off the face of the earth; isaving that I will not utterly destroy the house of Jacob, saith the LORD.
9:9, ¶ For, lo, I will command, and I will sift the house of Israel among all nations, like as corn is sifted in a sieve, yet shall not the least grain fall upon the earth.
9:10, All the sinners of my people shall die by the sword, which say, The evil shall not overtake nor prevent us.
9:11, In that day will I raise up the jtabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
9:12, That they may possess the remnant of kEdom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.
9:13, Behold, the ldays come, saith the LORD, that the plowman shall movertake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop nsweet wine, and all the hills shall melt.
9:14, And I will bring again the ocaptivity of my people of Israel, and they shall pbuild the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them.
9:15, And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be qpulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the LORD thy God.

Eze 22:1, Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,
22:2, Now, thou son of man, wilt thou ajudge, wilt thou judge the bbloody city? yea, thou shalt shew her all her abominations.
22:3, Then say thou, Thus saith the Lord GOD, The city csheddeth blood in the midst of it, that her time may come, and maketh idols against herself to defile herself.
22:4, Thou art become dguilty in thy blood that thou hast shed; and hast defiled thyself in thine idols which thou hast made; and thou hast caused thy days to draw near, and art come even unto thy years: therefore have I made thee a ereproach unto the heathen, and a mocking to all countries.
22:5, Those that be near, and those that be far from thee, shall mock thee, which art infamous and much vexed.
22:6, Behold, the fprinces of Israel, every one were in thee to their power to shed blood.
22:7, In thee have they gset light by father and mother: in the midst of thee have they dealt by oppression with the hstranger: in thee have they vexed the fatherless and the widow.
22:8, Thou hast idespised mine holy things, and hast jprofaned my sabbaths.
22:9, In thee are men that carry ktales to shed blood: and in thee they eat upon the mountains: in the midst of thee they commit lewdness.
22:10, In thee have they discovered their lfathers' nakedness: in thee have they humbled her that was mset apart for pollution.
22:11, And one hath committed abomination with his nneighbour's wife; and another hath olewdly defiled his daughter in law; and another in thee hath humbled his psister, his father's daughter.
22:12, In thee have they taken qgifts to shed blood; thou hast taken rusury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbours by sextortion, and hast forgotten me, saith the Lord GOD.
22:13, ¶ Behold, therefore I have smitten mine hand at thy tdishonest gain which thou hast made, and at thy blood which hath been in the midst of thee.
22:14, Can thine heart endure, or can thine hands be strong, in the days that I shall deal with thee? I the LORD have spoken it, and will do it.
22:15, And I will scatter thee among the uheathen, and disperse thee in the countries, and will consume thy filthiness out of thee.
22:16, And thou shalt take thine vinheritance in thyself in the sight of the heathen, and thou shalt know that I am the LORD.
1Co 6:9, Know ye not that the eunrighteous shall not finherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither gfornicators, nor hidolaters, nor iadulterers, nor jeffeminate, nor kabusers of themselves with mankind,
6:10, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor lextortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
6:11, And such were some of you: but ye are mwashed, but ye are nsanctified, but ye are ojustified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
6:12, pAll things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.
6:13, qMeats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for rfornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.
6:14, And God hath both sraised up the Lord, and twill also raise up us by his own power.
6:15, Know ye not that your ubodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the vmembers of Christ, and make them the members of an wharlot? God forbid.
6:16, What? know ye not that he which is ajoined to an harlot is one body? bfor two, saith he, shall be one flesh.
6:17, But he that is joined unto the Lord is cone spirit.
6:18, dFlee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth eagainst his own body.
6:19, What? know ye not that your body is the ftemple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and gye are not your own?
6:20, For ye are hbought with a price: therefore iglorify God in your jbody, and in your kspirit, which are God's.

  Heb 9:11, But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
9:12, Neither by the ablood of goats and calves, but by his own bblood he entered in conce into the holy place, having obtained deternal redemption for us.
9:13, For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an eheifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the fpurifying of the flesh:
9:14, How much more shall the gblood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without hspot to God, ipurge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
9:15, And for this cause he is the jmediator of the knew testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
9:16, For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
9:17, For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
9:18, Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
9:19, For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
9:20, Saying, aThis is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
9:21, Moreover he bsprinkled with blood both the tabernacle, and all the vessels of the ministry.
9:22, And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without cshedding of blood is no remission.
9:23, It was therefore necessary that the dpatterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
9:24, For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the etrue; but into fheaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us:
  9:25, Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place gevery year with blood of others;
9:26, For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to hput away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
9:27, And as it is appointed unto men once to idie, but after this the jjudgment:
9:28, So Christ was konce offered to bear the sins of lmany; and unto them that mlook for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
